Damaging winds, tree damage, power outage threat

A damaging wind event is likely on Wednesday and Wednesday night which could cause damage to trees and  property as well as power outages.  Severe storms are also possible Wednesday afternoon.  There is even a chance of tornadoes if storms organize in a certain way.

Wind gusts Wednesday are expected to be 45 to 55 mph, and even as high as 65 mph.  This in combination with saturated ground and recent storm damage has left the area vulnerable to further tree damage and tree failure.  Unseen defects will leave many trees vulnerable to this high wind event.  The lack of leaves will mean deciduous trees will not be affected in the way they were in September but there will likely still be damage.

Severe ice storm photos

See photos of the central Kentucky ice storm here.  These were taken near Danville, KY.

Arborist Lary Hanks in Lexington reports that this ice storm was worse than the devestating storm of 1999.

The storm that was then wasn’t then was?

Last week we mentioned a large storm which could hit early this week.  By the weekend it became apparent that that storm would miss us.  So, why did we get a big storm on the day we said the storm would miss us?

The storm forecast last week actually moved off the Atlantic coast, missing most of the U.S..  Another weaker storm formed in our area and dumped the rather narrow but potent band of snow we saw Tuesday.  This storm was not foreseen very far in advance but accompanied the push of cold air which was originally expected to merge with the east coast storm.

Tuesday’s snowfall of 4.6 inches at my location, plus 1.0 inches overnight, brings my total snowfall since Jan. 1 to 21.2 inches.  Normal for an entire year in Cincinnati is about 23 inches, so if it’s seemed snowy this year…..!

Warmer weather and a chance of rain will be the rule next week.
