Severe Weather and Very High Winds Expected Today and Tonight

The parameters which would lead to a major severe event this afternoon are in place but rather marginal, meaning that the margin between a very damaging afternoon and a breezy day is rather thin.  The weather service will be launching a weather balloon in the early afternoon to try to gauge how things are setting up  It is prudent at this point to prepare for a very wild afternoon and night with downded trees, power outages, and possibly a tornado or two.

Current NWS statement:

Severe Weather and Very High Winds Expected Today and Tonight

A fast-moving line of thunderstorms is expected to develop this afternoon in advance of a cold front. This line of thunderstorm will have the potential to produce widespread damaging winds and a few tornadoes.

After the front moves through, a prolonged period of very high winds is expected this evening and overnight. Winds will gust to 40 to 50 mph tonight, and may gust as high as 60 mph at times.

High wind warning

Severe weather outlook

Damaging winds, tree damage, power outage threat

A damaging wind event is likely on Wednesday and Wednesday night which could cause damage to trees and  property as well as power outages.  Severe storms are also possible Wednesday afternoon.  There is even a chance of tornadoes if storms organize in a certain way.

Wind gusts Wednesday are expected to be 45 to 55 mph, and even as high as 65 mph.  This in combination with saturated ground and recent storm damage has left the area vulnerable to further tree damage and tree failure.  Unseen defects will leave many trees vulnerable to this high wind event.  The lack of leaves will mean deciduous trees will not be affected in the way they were in September but there will likely still be damage.
