Spring Frost/Freeze Information from National Weather Service Wilmington

…FROST/FREEZE HEADLINE INFORMATION…

A temperature of 32 degrees fahrenheit has officially been recorded
as late as May 25th in Cincinnati, May 16th at Columbus and May
21st at Dayton. However, elements such as topography, urban or
rural setting and placement of the recording instrument can create
wide variations in temperatures across an area.

National Weather Service temperatures are officially taken at an
elevation of five feet above the ground, but the temperature at
ground level may be colder. On typical spring nights when frost
occurs, the temperatures at the five foot level may read 36 degrees
while at ground level it is actually the 32 degrees needed to form
frost.

The following reference table will give an idea as to when the last
freezing temperatures might occur, based on the last 30 years of
climatological data (1981 to 2010) at each of the listed locations.

Please remember to water…correctly!

Water once per week, one inch per week, under the entire branch spread, in the absence of rain, May through November. Either rainfall or your watering should equal the one inch per week. Put out a sprinkler and a straight sided soup can or rain gauge and measure one inch per week.

Meteorological Versus Astronomical Seasons. Spring is here!

Spring: March 1-May 31; Summer: June 1-August 31; Fall: September 1-November 30; Winter: December 1-February 28 (29)

You may have noticed that Arbor Doctor, meteorologists and climatologists define seasons differently from “regular” or astronomical spring, summer, fall, and winter. So, why do  meteorological and astronomical seasons begin and end at different times? Read more here>>>

The Super Outbreak of Tornadoes – April 3-4, 1974

Tornado number 43, the Sayler Park F5, is the only tornado I ever personally witnessed. I was in third grade. Map by Dr. T. Fujita, University of Chicago

April 3 is an infamous day in Cincinnati, Xenia, Louisville, and many other locations in the United States. On this date in 1974 one of the largest tornado outbreaks in US history rampaged across the eastern US.

There were six F5 tornadoes that day, more than in any one day in any outbreak in US history. The US can go several years between F5, or now EF5, tornadoes. Two of the F5 tornadoes hit Xenia, OH, and the west side of Cincinnati.

The Xenia tornado was thought to be one of the strongest ever to hit the US. The west side Cincinnati tornado was actually a tri-state tornado, first touching down near Rising Sun, Indiana, then crossing the Ohio River and moving through Boone County, Kentucky, then crossing the Ohio River again and tearing the heart out of Sayler Park, then moving along South Road in Green Township before roping out and lifting in Dent.

The Sayler Park tornado was the only tornado I ever personally witnessed, viewing it from my family’s house in Westwood. The devastation on that day was sobering. Nobody who lived through it will ever forget that day.
